Portugal and Galicia Trip - Day 3

December 30th, 2015 - Sintra and Lisbon

Even though it was raining off and on, I wanted to visit Sintra which is located about 40 minutes outside of Lisbon.  I saw some amazing pictures of the palaces in the mountains on the internet and I wanted to see it for myself.

With my parents, we could divide up the kids, so we took two in our car and my parents took two in their car.  It made for much calmer travelling.  It was raining consistently when we arrived at the Palácio Nacional da Pena.  We were actually lucky that we came on a rainy day in December because it wasn't crowded, we were able to find free parking and we could enjoy walking through the palace gardens up to the castle. When it stopped raining it was still very misty and so the Palácio looked like a colourful fairy tale castle in the clouds.

Looks like a mini-mosque in the palace gardens

A little wet, but happy

The kids enjoyed exploring the outer walls of the palace

Doesn't it look like a castle out of a Disney movie?

It's good to arrive early as the tour buses start to arrive mid-morning

Grandma and Grandpa always ready for adventure
In Medieval times a monastery was built on this location but it was mostly destroyed during the earthquake of 1755.  Between 1842-1854 King Ferdinand decided to use the location to build a summer palace for the royal family.  The palace has been used as a national monument and museum since the Republican Revolution of 1910.  It actually got quite busy inside the palace as groups of tourists started to arrive.  I can't imagine how busy it must be in the summer time, best to visit Sintra in the off-season.
