La Diada

Today is a holiday in Catalunya.  On Sept. 11th the Catalans commemorate the day they were defeated in the Spanish War of Succession and therefore lost their independence and became part of Spain.  It is actually quite amazing that the independence movement is able to gather so much support.  When we came home we saw some of the pictures on the news.  This year is actually the 300 year anniversary of the fall of Catalunya in 1714 so it was supposed to be an extra special protest.  Thousands of people lined Diagonal and Gran Via dressed in red and yellow shirts to form a giant human V.   It think that it is supposed to be a reminder for people to go out and vote for independence.  Here is a link if you would like to see pictures of today's protest:  http://www.lavanguardia.com/politica/20140910/54415849103/imagenes-diada-de-catalunya.html

We did not participate in any of the protests, but instead headed to Sitges with friends and enjoyed a day on the beach.

Last year we actually got stuck on Diagonal (the main street that crosses Barcelona) because of the human chain across Catalunya protest of Sept. 11 2013.  Here are a few pictures we took that day.

  1. Hello Tanya! What a surprise to find your blog!! It is really interesting.
It was funny to read about the fact that time flies when you are homeschooling ;). I always remember a sentence from film the wizard of oz saying: It's amazing how time flies when you are having fun!
So I hope you are having fun with your daughter, because that is goal number one of homeschooling: have fun!
Don't look too much at other blogs. I look at them just because I like it, but I have learned not to want to do every fantastic activity. Most of the time I write it down in my agenda, not to forget and after a while I find out it wasn't really necessary to do it, but the writing it down gives you a sensation of: if I want to do it I will have the information.
At least that works for me to calm down and not overload because you could easily get a homeschool burnout ;).

By the way, we were at the big V yestarday at Gran Via ;). The V stand for Vote and Victory. But it is not to remember that we have to vote, but to ask for the right to vote because the Spanish government does not want to give the catalan people the right to vote for their independence.

Hope you soon can find a sollution for the Visa problem. Have you tried filling in the name of the "Linked on learning" as a schoolname?? Maybe they won't notice.....

  2. Thanks for clearing up the meaning of the V. It was an amazing demonstration of solidarity. It must have been quite an experience to have participated.

We have been quietly observing the political situation here in Catalunya. Since we are here temporarily we haven't felt the need to get involved in politics, but since I have started homeschooling I kind of want to challenge the government's stance on education.

We did try to submit 'Link on Learning' as proof that our daughter is being schooled, but they wouldn't accept it. We will find a solution I'm sure.
